Day 15 – Nice

Posted on July 11, 2017

Very Nice.

The first half of our day was fairly uninteresting, involving us packing and travelling from Cannes to Nice via train, then checking into the hotel etc.

We did however walk around the local area to get a sense of the location and city, as well as stopped for lunch at a café. The main street in Nice leading to the city centre reminded me a lot of the main street in Dublin – a very wide road, with trams running down the middle, shops and restaurants either side, people everywhere. Nice definitely feels larger and more spacious than Cannes, which had tighter streets, and felt a bit more residential.

After our little local venture, our rooms were ready and we were able to check in and have a bit of a rest. Mid-afternoon we headed back out (Cherri wasn’t feeling well so stayed behind) and went to a park in the city. It was nice to walk through and was a refreshing change from the surrounding city.

From there we continued on towards Castle Hill, which is a larger park, situated on a hill overlooking Nice, with panoramic views of the city and coastline. It took some time to find the right way and then climb all the stairs up, but we were treated to some pretty awesome views.

We spent a bit of time up there, before heading back down to find somewhere to get dinner. There is apparently a lift which you can use to avoid all the stairs, but it was closed.

No matter – back down we went and found a nice looking restaurant which was incredibly busy, which is always a good sign, so we sat down and ate there. I didn’t see the name of the place, but it was tucked away a bit in a small street, so didn’t seem like an obvious touristy place.

We enjoyed our meal as the sun began to set, and had a pleasant conversation with a young couple sitting next to us who were travelling from London.

We had a chat ‘n’ a laugh.

Day 14 – Cannes

Chi-cannes you believe it?

Another pretty relaxed day today, starting with breakfast at the cafe just outside our apartment. I had a nice Brie sandwich on a baguette (as one must in France). After breakfast, we walked to the local markets they have on a Monday and looked around.

No camera today either, as we didn’t venture anywhere new today, just walking around familiar streets. Another midday rest and some takeaway pizza for lunch, before an afternoon walk by the beach and some gelato.

A home cooked dinner of pasta this evening, and some final preparation/packing of our things, as we leave for Nice tomorrow. It’s only a half-hour train ride from here which is good. Hopefully more excitement tomorrow.

Day 13 – Cannes

Step out, step out of the sun if you keep getting burned.

A home cooked breakfast today once again, before heading out for a nice long walk on the beach, on La Croisette (a popular long street stretching along the coast). I opted not to lug around my camera and gear bag during the walk, so no photos to show, but was nice not to have that extra weight.

We also stopped into a cafe for a drink and some desserts, as it had started sprinkling a bit surprisingly. It didn’t last long though, and we continued our walk up the coast, before returning back to the apartment mid-afternoon.

After a rest and a late lunch/early dinner, we headed back out, going to Le Suquet, which is the old part of Cannes – cobblestone roads, older architecture and at the top of the hill, giving great panoramic views of the city. We walked around a bit, stopped at a cafe for snack and a drink.

Then it was back up the hill to look over the bay, watching the sun set over the city.

Day 12 – Cannes

Oui oui, mon ami, je m’appelle Lafayette.

Another day begins, and a nice slow start this morning. Some fresh baguette, cheese, and eggs for breakfast at the apartment, before walking towards the port to take the ferry to Saint-Marguerite, a small, nearby island.

The island has a trail around the perimeter, which is about 8km long. We picked a direction and started walking, following the trail along the coast, braving the hot sun and enjoying the beaches and views. There were some nice forest trails too, cutting through the island.

After we made it back to the dock, we were in serious need of water, rest (and for me at least, food). We caught the ferry back, and stopped at the same restaurant where we had lunch yesterday, La Pizza Cresci, for a snack and a drink. We shared a pizza and drank copious amounts of water, before heading back to the apartment for a bit.

A short rest (the others did a bit of shopping), and we walked to Grill & Wines for dinner, where we had some nice fancy steaks. No photos of that, was too hungry.
